The Festival of Roses in the Rose Valley is held in a region in Bulgaria, located just south of the Balkan Mountains.
The Rose valley is famous for its rose-growing industry which has been cultivated there for centuries, and which produces close to half of the world’s rose oil.
The center of the rose oil industry is Kazanlak, while other towns of importance include Karlovo and Kalofer. Each year, festivals are held celebrating roses and rose oil.
The picking season lasts from May to June. During this period, the area gives off a pleasant scent and is covered with multi-coloured flowers. The gathering rose process, traditionally a woman’s task, requires great dexterity and patience. The flowers are carefully cut one by one and laid in willow-baskets which are then sent to the distilleries. Tourists are welcome to join the rose-picking process, an experience one of its kind.
Every year, in the first weekend of June, the local municipality organizes the annual Festival of Roses. Nowadays the Rose Festival is an international event, visited and enjoyed by thousands of tourists.
The festival program includes the traditional rose-picking ritual and rose – distillation that gives you a true feeling of authenticity and the coronation of Queen Rose.
Cultural, dance, music, artistic, social events happen across Kazanlak and the surrounding villages in May-June. You can attend concerts, workshops, expos, parades and other activities for all individual tastes with the Festival parade and the Rose Queen coronation being the culmination of it all.
